Takachiho Gorge was formed by volcanic activity from Mount Aso, featuring cliffs rising 80 to 100 meters and stretching for about 7 kilometers. The most famous site here is Manai Falls, designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Visitors can rent boats to get a close view of the waterfall and the breathtaking scenery of the gorge. Magnificent Gorge:
After the eruption of Mount Aso, the cooled lava formed spectacular columnar joints, which were then sculpted by the erosion of the Gokase River into the stunning V-shaped Takachiho Gorge.


Land of Mythology：
Takachiho is known as the “Land of Mythology,” and is said to be the place where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended to earth. It is home to several important Shinto shrines. If you wish to explore Japan’s mythological culture, the most famous among them include:

• Takachiho Shrine – Dedicated to deities from Japanese mythology such as Ninigi-no-Mikoto, and known for hosting Kagura dance performances.
• Amanoiwato Shrine – Believed to be the site of Amanoiwato, the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu once secluded herself. The shrine consists of the East Main Hall and West Main Hall.
• Amanoyasugawara – A cave located near Amanoiwato Shrine, said to be where the gods gathered to discuss Amaterasu’s return.

Takachiho Beef:
Takachiho Beef is a premium wagyu breed from the Takachiho area in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Only black-haired wagyu raised and fattened under the management of the Takachiho Regional Agricultural Cooperative and graded A4 or higher can be called Takachiho Beef. Known for its tender texture and rich flavor, it has won the highest honor, the “Prime Minister’s Award,” at the National Competitive Exhibition of Wagyu.

Takachiho Shuzo’s Aged Umeshu:
Brewed with locally grown plums and authentic barley shochu, offering a rich and full-bodied taste.

• Address: 1073-1 Iwato, Takachiho-cho, Nishiusuki-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture
• Features: Believed to be the site of the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu secluded herself. Within the shrine grounds, Amanoyasugawara is a sacred spot for making wishes, attracting many visitors who come to pray.
